Take a Self-Defense Class

Many martial arts studios offer basic self defense techniques for people of all ages. You will learn how to safeguard yourself and defensive moves to use in the event of an attack. You want to be sure that the techniques you learn will be of use if you are attacked.

Safety in Numbers

Whenever you are going out alone, especially at night, consider taking a friend along with you. Assailants who act alone may be deterred if there is more than one person in your group because they may not be able to overpower multiple people. Have someone walk you to your car at night to ensure you get there safely. Stay in well-lit places and carefully observe your surroundings if you are alone.

Arm Yourself

Any solid object can be used as a weapon if needed. Your keys can be used to gouge and umbrellas can be used to strike. If you don’t have anything with you, grab the closest object off the street. Pepper spray can be bought at almost any hardware store and is very easy to carry along in your hand. Having a cell phone ready to call police in the event of an emergency is also a good idea.

Be Unpredictable

Varying your routine can help to avoid crimes of opportunity. If you go the same places at the same time every day, criminals will know exactly when you are at your most vulnerable. Take different routes home and come home at different times. Consider running a few errands after work, or stopping by a friend’s house a couple of times a week. If you must go home at the same time each day, ask a co-worker who lives in the area to follow you home and make sure you get inside.

Preventative measure can greatly reduce the chances of becoming a victim in an attack. It is important to remember if you are attacked, to give up any belongings that are demanded of you without question. Belongings can be replaced and life should be protected at all costs.
