Orange Juice Recipes and Their Health benefits

Juicing Tips For Oranges

Oranges and other citrus fruits are excellent sources of bio-flavonoids. Bio-flavonoids are powerful antioxidants that are always found naturally in foods that contain vitamin C. Research has shown that when we take vitamin C, more of it is absorbed into the bloodstream if bio-flavonoids are also present (and vice versa). This is the reason that many companies add bio-flavonoids to their vitamin C supplements to improve the marketability and effectiveness of their products.

Although there is bio-flavonoids in the flesh of the orange, the vast majority of them are found in the white membranes inside the peel and at the center of the orange. This is important information for juicing oranges (and all citrus fruits), that we can use to our advantage to get the best out of our homemade orange  juicer recipes. I wouldn’t recommend juicing the whole orange peel, because it will produce a very sour unpleasant juice. However, we can scrape off some of the white from the inside of the peel and put this through the juicer along with the flesh ( be sure to include the white pith at the center of the orange too). It is only the outer orange colored side of the peel that is really sour, and the white membranes are actually the most bio-flavonoid dense part of the peel.

Health Benefits of Bio-Flavonoids
There are three kinds of bio-flavonoids that are found abundantly in oranges and citrus fruits and they are called hesperidin, tangeritin, and naringenin. These three bio-flavonoids have been found to have inhibiting effects upon the production of histamines and other inflammatory agents released during asthma attacks. So juicing bio-flavonoid rich foods like oranges may be helpful in relieving the symptoms of asthma attacks and possibly helping to reduce the amount of future asthma attacks.

Bio-flavonoids are also helpful for fending off heart disease. Just like vitamin C, bio-flavonoids can help protect the arteries from free radical damage that can cause inflammation and atherosclerosis - a condition that is a leading cause of heart disease.
