Benefitting From Alcohol Detoxification

For those who are addicted to alcohol, undergoing alcohol detox treatment is one of the best ways to overcome this. When undergoing detox, your body eliminates all alcohol from it, mainly through totally eliminating all acohol instake.  Medication is also usually used to help control detox symptoms and the person’s diet is re-evaluated as well.  It is important that anyone undergoing alcohol detoxification also receives support from family and friends.

Providing your liver and kidneys are still functioning, they should be able to totally eliminate all of the alcohol from your body. Treatment depends a lot on the level of dependency the person had, with those being most dependent on alcohol generally needing different treatment than someone who is merely a very heavy drinker, for example, but is not totally dependent.  Some people are even able to undergo the detoxification process at home, although many people do need to enter a center for treatment.

For an alcoholic, treatment is usually quite a bit more complex and it usually involves the person staying at a center for several weeks.  Side-effects, such as hallucinations and other physical problems can occur, which may need medical help and assistance especially in cases where the person is addicted other substances as well.

Generally, alcohol detox takes around six weeks to complete. During this time, and immediately after the initial detoxification, the patient receives a high-protein diet, in an effort to rebuild body muscle. Fiber rich foods are also given, and vitamin supplement are also usually needed.  Patients are encouraged to drink plenty of water also, as that helps eliminate poisons from the body.  Other physical problems that may have resulted from alcohol abuse are also treated with medication and if the person is suffering from depression or any other mental illness this too is normally diagnosed and treated during this six week period.
