A resistance band is a great space saver, and depending on its elasticity, it can give a quite effective workout or help with stretching after a workout. By attaching the band to your door, you can perform even more exercises.
An item that you will definitely need is dumbbells. One option is to get several pairs of dumbbells that are of a set weight and then purchase more as you get stronger. Another option is to get a pair of adjustable dumbbells. They come in the inexpensive manual variety that resembles a smaller version of a barbell or an automatic version that changes weights with a twist of a knob.
For comforts sake, you may want to get a mat for when you are doing exercises on the floor or for stretching. A workout bench is a great idea to make sure your positioning is proper while you are working out. Also think about getting an inflatable workout ball. They take up a bit of space but can be used in a multitude of ways. Think ahead by getting yourself a few cheap towels for your sweat as well as some comfortable workout clothes.
