The term radical hysterectomy can create a huge concern for many women to hear as it means undergoing a surgery.
When this word is used in conjunction with hysterectomy, then the stress level raises in a big way. Radical hysterectomy was discovered to treat cervical cancer in the late 1800s. Due to the lack of other better alternative solutions, doctors started removing the affected areas of the body and the surrounding organs in order to save women’s lives.
The first surgical operation of radical hysterectomy was done in 1895 through the abdomen. Today this procedure is known as abdominal hysterectomy. Around the 20th century, a radical vaginal surgery was introduced.
The new procedure helped many to have shorter hysterectomy recovery time, less complication and fewer long term limitations. The American Cancer Society played a big role in reducing the number of surgeries needed to beat cervical cancer. Instead, they suggested a Pap test to be performed at least once a year to catch possible cancer cells at its early stages of development.
Due to these great preventive and early screening methods, the needs to do a cervical cancer procedure have decreased by 70 percent. The reason many have cancer is still a mystery. This is also true for all types of cancers including cancer of the cervix. Some researchers had found that infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) to be a possible reason for this condition.
Other studies have shown that sexually transmitted diseases such as, herpes, Chlamydia and gonorrhea to cause these types of cancers. Smoking is also linked to this factor. Researchers have found traces of nicotine, tar and hydrocarbons in the cervixes of women with this kind of cancer.
Some studies have found oral contraceptives to cause such disease. These studies are still under review due to similar studies showing the opposite.
Regardless of the reason for this condition, a less invasive radical hysterectomy treatment is making it easy for many to treat this condition.
