If you’ve been enjoying the surf like I have this year then you’ve probably already invested in your own board rather than renting a surfboard each time you want to go (not economical at all but worth doing to make sure that you want to keep surfing). If you have just invested in a board then you’ll be looking for the best surfboard bags. You may be lucky enough to have found a real good second hand surfboard that’s going to give you a few seasons of enjoyment before you upgrade to a newer, sleeker model (I’m guessing that really depends how much time you spend in the water and when your spending time in the water and sun I hope that yor using Invisible Zinc 4HR water resistant sunblock). You may have even gone straight for a new board which I must say is a great experience, to choose and pick up a pristine board that’s exactly for your size, how great is that?
Whatever way you’ve gone around buying a board you don’t just stop there. The really important thing you need is a board bag. I know, it’s a pain, an added expense but really you need something that will protect your surfboard from knocks. You really don’t want to ding a board and end up with water getting in it, not good.
There are various types of board bags and you really need to make that call based on how you’ll be using your surfboard. Those of us lucky enough to live near the sea can really get away with a surfboard sock. Have a look at the Dakine Surfboard sock; which will easily slip over the board and protect it whilst you walk to the beach. However, someone living right on the coast has the advantage of being able to spend a good amount of time in the water and will advance quickly so they may end up buying a surfboard travel bag or coffin because you’ll be wanting to put your skills to the test in far away places.
The majority of us will need a surfboard day bag, to keep our boards nice and protected whilst stuck on the roof rack or in the car whilst we drive the miles between home life and the beach. For these types of bags the best by far is the FCS Dayrunner Surf bag, this may just be the best because it’s the one I own but it really is pretty damn good. Day Runner surf bags have a nice amount of padding to protect from dings, there’s a good amount of room to slip your wetsuit in if needed and a zipper for those of you who have a single fin board. The carry handles are real nice and strong and there is a detachable shoulder strap that is nicely padded for your comfort. The Dakine Daylight bag is also a pretty great bag and has a number of models to suit your board type and length.
The main thing is to keep your board in good shape; these surfboard bags have a silver side which reflects the light to stop your wax melting every where. Seriously the FCS Dayrunner is the way to go.
