Chia seeds, which originated in ancient Mexico and now being grown in many countries, are filled with several nutrients which are imperative to the body’s health. Since the discovery of the chia in the 1990’s, research has been made from time to time until those researched collected facts proving the chia’s composition of the following:
1. Omega 3 fatty acids which promote a healthy heart.
2. Antioxidants which keep the body’s cells from free radicals that damage the body.
3. Dietary fiber which regulates bowel movement.
4. Vitamins which improve the immune system’s ability to fight off diseases.
5. Minerals needed for muscle and bone formation.
6. Proteins for increased energy levels.
7. Essential amino acids for normal growth, tissue repair, blood sugar regulation, and energy building.
As mentioned above, dietary fiber and essential amino acids are supplied by the whole or ground chia seeds. Soluble fiber is responsible in keeping satiety to the stomach, or the feeling of fullness in the stomach. Insoluble dietary fiber on the other hand is responsible in maintaining the normal functions of the digestive system. This is due to the hydrophilic properties of the chia. If you put the seeds in a glass of water and leave it for 30 minutes you will find the seeds completely dissolved and the water then turns into a gel. The seed is capable of absorbing water 7 to 10 times its weight. It is believed the same thing happens in the stomach which creates a feeling of fullness and thereby decreasing cravings in between meals. One amino acid that eliminates body fats is methionine, and this is absolutely good news to people who want to lose weight. Potassium, a mineral found in the chia, is important in the elimination of body wastes as well.
In conclusion, the chia seeds are not only excellent in controlling your appetite; they are well needed to keep the body free from fats that increase our weight, and wastes that may store in our bodies longer than the body requires.
