What is the best way to get the addiction help that you need? This depends on the person, what drugs they are on, and how far along in their addiction they may be. It also depends greatly on what exactly they are willing to do in order to get help for their problem. So let’s consider some of the options for moment.
1) Counseling or therapy – in some cases, people who are early in the addiction process or who are addicted to “lighter” drugs may be able to see good results simply from seeing a counselor or therapist. Instead of arguing about if marijuana is addictive or not, they can simply decide to change their life and do it by talking it through in therapy. Now if someone is addicted to alcohol, crack cocaine, and opiates, then they are probably not going to be able to turn their life around through counseling alone. See the difference there? It has to do with how addicted a person really is and how far along they are. If they are early in the process, then therapy might be useful.
2) Drug rehab – Another way to get drug addiction help is to check into a rehab facility. There they will run you through detox, put you into groups, show you 12 step meetings, and also hook you up with a counselor. In this sense, it is actually much more comprehensive of a solution than everything else, because they draw from so many different resources. If you really are serious about change then you should start by checking into rehab.
3) 12 step meetings – some people skip the rehab, the counseling, and professional services altogether and just get clean and sober by attending 12 step meetings such as AA or NA. This is perfectly viable if it works for you, and that is the whole point right there: find something that works for you, and run with it.
