Hot Topic – The Fear of Driving

A new study has shown that the fear of driving is causing more problems as a nation than we first believed. It seems like more and more people are becoming afraid of driving. So what can we do to help them? How do we help them overcome their fear of driving? Well the first thing to do is to understand the fear of driving in more detail.

The fear of driving is not something that happens overnight. It is a problem that occurs over several bad experiences of driving (usually during lessons). This makes the brain think that anything to do with cars is dangerous and takes over your body. Your body goes into meltdown and starts to have a panic attack or anxiety attack while driving. This will include symptoms such as sweaty palms, dizziness and shortness of breath. Once these occur it can be quite hard to snap out of it and the panic attack usually has to run its course before you can calm down.

There are ways to get over your fear of driving but it takes a lot of commitment and hard work. You need to prepare yourself for the fact that you will feel out of control and your body may do things you don’t want it to but a strong mind is as good as a strong body so try to stay positive and persevere at overcoming your fear. If you still find it a struggle then seek professional help from a doctor who can prescribe you some medication to help calm your nerves before driving. Note that this type of medication should not be used for a prolonged period of time and should be used with caution as it can make you drowsy. Your doctor will make you aware of the side effects when they prescribe it to you.
