Since they’re worn for the purpose of fashion, it’s easy to forget that colored contact lenses still require proper care. These are, however, objects that are going to be spending their time sitting in your eyes. Both your comfort and your health depend on your being consistent in maintaining them properly.
The first step is to gather the supplies that you will need. You’ll need a contact lens case, and this should be replaced on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. You’ll will also have to buy cleaning solution. There are many kinds available, but you should stick with whatever was recommended by your optometrist and do not change brands – so we suggest you get a brand that is available everywhere and has travel sizes available.
When you’re going to handle your contacts, you must first wash your hands thoroughly. This means using soap and scrubbing vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Your eyes are very vulnerable to infection; it’s important not to touch them when you’re not certain that your hands are clean.
Before you insert the lenses, you should examine them closely for signs of damage. If they look like they’ve been torn, no matter how tiny the spot is, you should throw the lens away. Using a damaged lens is both painful and dangerous. Thoroughly rinse each lens with fresh solution from the bottle before inserting it. Once your lenses are in, you should empty the leftover solution from the case and leave it open so that it can dry.
The part where you actually clean your colored contact lenses comes when you remove them. Each one must be rinsed thoroughly with fresh solution as soon as it has been removed. If your cleaning solution requires rubbing the contacts, do so as it directs. Put fresh solution into the lens case along with the contacts, and close the lid tightly. The solution will clean the lenses as they soak, so most brands will require them to stay in the case for at least 6 hours before they’ll be ready for use.
Once you’ve been doing it for a few weeks, the process of taking care of your lenses will become both quick and automatic. Follow any special instructions that your optometrist gives to you, and be sure to replace your lenses as often as recommended. So long as you maintain them properly every time you use them, you can continue to enjoy wearing colored contact lenses with confidence.
