One of the first things a doctor will tell a patient suffering from pet allergies to get rid of the pet. This is not an acceptable alternative for many pet lovers. The thought of living without your beloved pet can be too much to bear. There are many alternatives to this dreadful solution.
People who are allergic to pets are usually allergic to the animal dander or saliva of the pet. Most people can find a viable allergy remedy, depending on how severe the allergy is for that individual.
As with any other contact or environmental allergy, the less contact with the allergen you have the better. This most likely means a stricter cleaning regimen then you would normally have, as well as extra precautions around the house.
Take note of where your pet spends the most time. Many pets will spend a lot of time when a pet bed, favorite blanket, or maybe a favorite chair. Wash any surface areas possible on a frequent basis and pay special attention to this target area. Wash blankets in hot water as often as possible to keep dander at bay.
Vacuum any carpets regularly. The more powerful the vacuum is, the better it will be at reducing those allergens. Some vacuums will do more damage than good by spitting allergens back into the air. Hardwood floors are optimal for any allergy sufferer, as carpets are the perfect hiding spot for many allergens.
Use a HEPA air filter to catch as many airborne allergens and possible.
Shampoo and brush your pet on a frequent basis. Also be sure to wash your hands after handling your pet in any way.
Target your symptoms with medications. Pet allergy symptoms include nasal congestion, red or itchy eyes, sneezing, headaches and post nasal drip. Look for over-the-counter decongestants, eye drops, nasal sprays or antihistamines to target specific symptoms.
