Sinus congestion is an ongoing problem for very many people and can severely affect the quality of life. Sinuses can become congested after a sinus infection, from pollution in the environment or from our bodies reactions to allergens such as mold, pollen or dust mites. If you have chronic sinus congestion then you will know that it causes you to feel tired, even when you have slept well, and the pressure behind and under the eyes causes a great deal of pain. You might even get toothache from the pressure on the nerves. If you also have a fever then you should see a doctor as you might have infected sinuses.
Using a Neti pot for sinus washouts
There are a number of things you can try at home to relieve the pressure, some people find relief from steam inhalations, some from using a neti pot so you need to find out the best way for you. After years of suffering from chronic sinusitis I’ve found that using a neti pot at the first sign of pressure has worked very well for me. A neti pot is a small pot shaped a little like a teapot with a spout that fits into the nostril. Warm salt water is placed in the pot, the spout placed in the nostril and the salt water allowed to flow into one nostril and out the other.
Many people are put off by the thought of flushing salt water through their nostrils but it is not an unpleasant sensation! If the water is at blood temperature and the salt solution the right concentration you can hardly feel anything. It’s important that you follow the instructions provided with your pot to ensure you use a correct technique and also dry out the sinuses properly afterwards.
Steam inhalation
Another treatment for congested sinuses you can try at home is steam inhalation. Eucalyptus oil is best. heat up some water, add a few drops of the oil and inhale the steam for fifteen to twenty minutes. Repeat twice a day until the sinuses are clear.
Both of these sinus congestion remedies are well worth a try but if they don’t clear up the problem be sure to check with your doctor. You may have a sinus infection or another problem that needs to be dealt with by a qualified medical practitioner.
