Take a Walk and Lose Some Weight

Of all the many ways of losing some weight, probably one of the least appreciated is the simple act of walking. Many dieters are caught up in carefully choosing their food and watching every spare calorie so they don’t bust the bank that they miss one of the easiest ways of boosting the effects of their efforts with an activity that really is simple and enjoyable to do. So let’s take a look at why walking is such a great way to enhance your probability of losing that excess weight.

While dieting alone is a well established means of unloading those extra pounds, one of the great tips for weight loss is in combining that diet with some form of daily exercise to help improve the metabolic rate to get your body burning those restricted but still consumed calories more efficiently. Walking is a great form of exercise that is easy to do on a daily basis and doesn’t take any particular need for planning for it to have its effect.

The trick to getting this right is to understand how to walk for the maximum benefit to your weight loss efforts. It’s not much use merely strolling along for ten minutes or so and thinking you’ve done a great job. That’s not enough, but you can still enjoy what you’re doing even though it means putting some more effort into it. The right way to do this is to walk with purpose, at a reasonably fast pace that is not uncomfortable but fast enough to get you breaking out in a sweat and raising your heart rate. Then you need to keep it up for more than about twenty minutes to get your body to demand more energy than it has available as sugars in your bloodstream.

Blood sugar starts to become depleted after about twenty minutes of sustained exercise and then the body must provide more for the muscles to keep working. That extra source is taken from the body’s supply of fat. In the case of walking those large leg muscles demand a lot of energy, which is why it is such a good form of energy. When it’s done for longer so you start burning body fat to keep going, then walking for weight loss (at an elevated pace) actually becomes a fat burning exercise too.

So next time you feel like a stroll around the block to get some fresh air, turn it into an exercise form by putting some effort into it and extending the time you’re doing it so that you can get the maximum benefit from this excellent exercise for losing weight and improving your health.
