Train Yoga to decrease back pain

Back pain is one of the worst medical conditions you can have, and needs no explanation for those that have experienced it. At its worst you are completely immobilized and neither lying down or standing up lessens the pain. It can be excruciating! But all back pain isn’t created equal and some people have several options they can pursue to help them get rid of the pain.

One of the most popular ways of decreasing back pain is by training yoga. Yoga for back pain has proven to be very effective for certain types of conditions. As always when you pick up advice like this on the Internet, consult with your doctor before following up on the advice. Remember that your type of back pain can actually get worse by doing certain exercises, so again, as your doctor if you can try Yoga before going any further.

If you doctor says its ok then its time to take your first lesson. Some people suggest home based Yoga training, with for example a DVD, as a good way to start. I don’t agree and suggest starting out with Yoga classes before trying this at home. The reason is that when you first start you will be needing guidance from a professional to correct the mistakes you make and to give you helpful advice. Start out with Yoga classes for at least a couple of months before you purchase an instructional DVD is my advice.

When you start out with Yoga it is smart to go slow. There will most definitely be positions that hurt, but if the pain is severe you should stop. You will probably also feel a bit of soreness the days that follow the training, but if this soreness doesn’t go away on day 4 or 5 you should contact your doctor and check if your body can handle the exercises.

If your body reacts positively to Yoga you can expect to strengthen your back and core, improve your posture, and hopefully decreasing your back pain. Give it a shot for a couple of months and see if you feel any difference.
