Dry hair can be an infuriating problem, but understanding why it happens, and then treating the root cause of the condition is the best route. Dryness occurs when the hair cannot absorb enough moisture, but this can be caused by a variety of factors, and usually more than one. Luckily, there are several treatments for dry hair, when used in conjunction with simple changes in routine, that can restore moisture, health and vitality to your tresses.
Dry hair results in dull, lackluster and brittle locks that feel hard instead of soft and smooth like healthy, moisturized hair. It craves moisture, and in most cases, could also benefit from some added protein. Dry hair also needs protection in the form of lubricants and emollients, which help the outside cuticle of the hair lay down, reducing frizziness and adding shine.
In rare cases, dryness is simply a natural condition of the hair not caused by external factors. If you’re unlucky enough to have naturally dry hair, you must focus on reducing dryness and promoting moisture absorption by applying weekly protein dry hair treatments and avoiding harsh chemicals, heat and styling tools.
Most of the time, however, dry hair is caused by the products used on the hair such as shampoos, styling gels and sprays, chemical hair dyes and perms. If your hair has been damaged in this way, you’ll need to lay off the styling products, use gentle and natural shampoos, and try to use natural hair dyes if you must color your hair.
Dry hair may also be caused by extended exposure to environmental conditions such as sunlight, salt, chlorine, salt water and heat. If your dry hair is a result of these elements, first try to limit your exposure to them and then apply some deep conditioning treatments for dry hair such as a hot oil treatment or protein treatment.
Some common protein treatments for dry hair include mayonnaise, olive oil and egg. You can mix the three together or use them singly, massage into the hair, wrap in a towel or plastic shower cap, allow to remain for at least 30 minutes, and then shampoo and rinse normally. Olive oil, safflower oil, corn oil and wheat germ oil can all be used to perform a hot oil treatment for dry hair. Simply massage the oil evenly through the hair, wrap in plastic, apply heat and allow the oil to remain for 30 minutes to several hours, depending on severity, then shampoo and rinse as usual.
