Snoring is a disturbing sound that is the result of vibrations of the uvula and soft palate in the throat. This is a condition that affects millions of people all over the World, and almost anyone has snored occasionally! If you like numbers, know that around 30% of women and 45% men are habitual snorers, and there are a greater percentage of people who have this problem because of factors such as alcohol intake and the effect of certain medications.
Although excess weight is a common factors that triggers snoring during the night, it is also true that skinny people can develop this condition. And well, this is because causes of snoring will vary according to each individual, so there is no cure-all solution; sometimes this can be a trial and error method because the cause won’t be too clear. To have higher chances of having success with a snoring treatment, it would be ideal to fully understand the causes.
There are cases where the vibration can appear as a result of excessive tissue relaxation triggered by the effect of alcohol and relaxing medications. Tissue that is over-relaxed will cause and obstruction in the throat and the air passage. In other cases, snoring can be a sign of a more serious problem, specifically obstructive sleep apnea, and a special treatment will be needed to address it, sometimes even needing snoring surgery.
Proper medical evaluation must be done before starting any treatment, sometimes, the doctor will ask your partner to help checking out your condition while you sleep to discard any problem related to sleep apnea. Support from your partner or spouse can be extremely valuable to help you eliminate snoring, and I know this from personal experience!
Surgical solutions are also available, such as LAUP and Somnoplasty, however, know that these solutions are not 100% effective, they can help you reduce snoring greatly in some tough cases, but their effect seems to be less effective in the long term.
