Weight Loss Diet Tips: Yes, there are good fats?

Many people are aware that there are fats like saturated and Tran’s fat that should not be eaten in large quantities or at all.  However, many people may be surprised to know that fats are needed for a balance diet and that there are fats that are actually healthy for you.  It is my goal to state the different types of fats and then give an example of which foods contain them.

THE GOOD:

1.  MUFA’s or monounsaturated fats.

MUFA’s which is short for monounsaturated is a necessity for any health conscious diet because it not only lowers bad cholesterol, aka LDL, but it also raises good cholesterol, aka HDL.  By eating walnuts, almonds, peanuts, avocado, canola oil and olive oil you can actually raise your fat burning metabolism.  Hence, your food will be working for you instead of you having to burn your food off.

2.  POLY’s or Polyunsaturated Fats

It is true that most fish products are fatty meats but the fatty substances in this case actually lower cholesterol, which most other meats do not do.  POLY’s can be found in most fresh fish that is not overly processed or cooked.  Try to think grilled or baked fish instead of fried or battered.  Soy, corn, and oils like sunflower oil or fish oil are also high in polyunsaturated fats.

THE BAD

1.  The Popular Saturated Fats

When trying to figure out what are saturated fats try to think meats from animals or products that are made from animals, like eggs or dairy products.  Protein is found in meat and is needed for a balanced diet, but try to eat lean meat or products whose fat content has be lowered.

2.  The Newly Created Trans Fat

Tran’s fat is a relatively newer term because it is not something that is found naturally in the food we eat.  Trans were developed when companies started to hydrogenate food for delivery and to store for shelf life.  Think products that are prepackaged for fast food restaurants or grocery stores, microwave foods, or food that is meant to be made quickly from a box or frozen foods section.  Microwave meals and popcorn, chip products, most fast food, stick up butter, vegetable shortening, and vending machine food is examples.

Try Some of These Suggestions When Preparing Food You Eat.

1.  Think fresh meats and vegetables.
2.  Cook in Canola, Olive Oil, or Sunflower Oil.
3.  Drink skim or 1% milk.
4.  Eat lean meats that had fat removed.
5.  When eating out try to eat grilled or baked food.
6.  Avoid overly processed foods.
7.  Avoid microwave food that is not geared for healthy eating.
