What are the causes of migraines?

Though there are a number of theories, the medical community does not know exactly what causes migraines. Migraines affect several million Americans, and the treatment options for migraines are extensive. Most experts can agree on one thing: whether you have mild headaches or severe and frequent migraines, stress (either emotional or physical) plays a large role. There are other known triggers, and some things you can do to help yourself.

Various triggers have been known to cause migraines, and the most common one is stress. Whether it comes from your boss at work, or your rebellious teenager at home, excessive stress can be a precursor to a pounding headache. Another known trigger is a poor diet. Foods such as aged cheese, alcohol, fried food, and sometimes chocolate can cause a migraine. Diets especially high in saturated fats are well-known to be bad for you, and can increase your headache risk. Skipping meals is also a danger, as low blood sugar levels are damaging to the entire body. Poor posture, excessive exercise, smoking, and excessive heat can also trigger migraines. Also, while caffeine has been known to reduce the intensity of migraines (it is an active ingredient in many painkillers), consuming it in excess can actually make them worse.

The best way to figure out the causes of your migraines is to keep a “headache diary”. As soon as you begin to feel symptoms, write down as much as you can remember. Include activities, what you ate or drank, any stressful events, and as many other details that you think could be related to your migraine. If you do this on a regular basis, you may be able to identify certain triggers that you can avoid. Generally, though, improving your health can have a drastic effect on the severity and frequency of migraines. Eat small, regular, healthy meals to avoid any dips in blood sugar, and stay hydrated to reduce the possibility of overheating. Moderate exercise can also reduce the likelihood of a migraine. You may want to try relaxation techniques, such as acupuncture or massages. There are home remedies for migraines too; including breathing techniques and aromatherapy which may help take the mind off of any outside stress.
