What to do About Red Bumps on Arms

If you have smooth skin, suddenly discovering a few red bumps on arms forming can be really frightening. You might assume that it must be an insect bite or a reaction to something you’d eaten but once they don’t seem to go away, you would want to do some research. The condition described is more scientifically known as keratosis pilaris, and is sometimes also called chicken skin.

Like the name suggests, the bumps resemble those of a featherless chicken and are red. This isn’t a result of any food intake but more commonly is hereditary. The condition is also not contagious.  Though there is no found cure, there are a few things that you should avoid doing to make sure that you don’t make the condition even worse. You also do have a  chance of being able to make them appear less noticeable. Then, there are other things you can do that won’t cure you but may reduce the redness.

Don’ts

  • Do not scrub your skin. Even if the bumps may really look like they could disappear if you scrubbed hard enough, don’t’ do it! You will only be irritating your skin and making it more red.
  • Do not use any creams without consulting a doctor. There are some ingredients that will only worsen the condition.
  • Don’t expose the area to extreme conditions. It is always good to keep your skin covered. This will protect it from the heat and cold which in extreme may be irritating to your skin.

Do’s

  • Do moisturize your skin. This may include using a moisturizing soap when bathing and lotion as well.
  • Do eat nutritious food. This can help your skin exfoliate.

Avoiding the mentioned things and following the above will help lessen the red bumps on arms. It can’t cure the condition but at least it won’t make it any worse.
