Yoga for the Newb

Increasing overall health and life expectancy is a function of staying in shape and increasing your mind as well as your body.  Whether its pop-culture or actual benefit yoga has become really popular as a way to get in shape.  One of the reasons it is so popular is because you can feel its effects almost immediately as you perform the yoga routines.  Many people are in the same ‘yoga for beginners,’ stage and find comfort in knowing they are not alone.

Make sure you plan for enough time to get loose and warm up your muscles before you head into the class, this can be done by jumping rope, a light jog or even ten minutes or so on the elliptical machine.  If you are a member of a chain gym or a local gym in your area there is a pretty good chance they offer a class you can take as a part of your normal gym fee.  For a few extra dollars you can attend either a specialty yoga place like Birkhams or the recreation center.

There is a lot of focus and attention that goes into properly training for yoga.  The mental focus helps you block out annoying thoughts and the stresses of the day.  In any sport the benefits attained in yoga will increase the ability you already have.  I’ve played sports a various levels of competition my whole life and I can say yoga was really the only exercising I did that increased my individual ability in each different sport equally.

Breathing is the quintessential benefit of any yoga endeavor.  Making sure you can breathe with proper technique will increase blood flow and dexterity.  With each class you will experience increased blood flow and reduced amounts of free radicals.  Stress can really set you back when it comes to sleep and recovery and yoga can ensure you have the time and blood flow to overcome those setbacks.

In addition to all the many health benefits attained with yoga, like better circulation and blood flow you can expect to see better posture which leads to better overall health.  When you increase your blood flow and posture you will develop better balance, which keeps your joints from over compensating – a problem that can lead to early arthritis and bad backs and hips.  Any new athletic activities you take on should be evaluated by a medical professional in order to make sure it will be of benefit to your overall health and wellness.
